ZÓCALO
The
zócalo is truly the heart of this colonial city with its
decorative tin bandstand set in the center of the square block
central park
with its benches and gardens. Surrounding the park are city streets
no longer open to traffic except that on foot. Lining these streets
are cafes, shops and hotels all of which are dominated by the cathedral
on one side and on the other side the new Museo del Palacio, a building that for many years was Oaxaca's
City Hall. All of those government offices have now been moved away
from the city center.
The
zócalo is the place to experience the thriving social life
of Oaxaca. Open air Sunday concerts often given by the Oaxaca Symphony
Orchestra and a continuing stream of other events and exhibits make
this an even more special place to take in and enjoy the character
of the city.
