El
Patricinio is an intriguing structure here in Oaxaca where so
many historic buildings have been painstakingly restored with
attention paid to every possible architectural and decorative
detail. Here, just across from Parque Llano, is a gem awaiting
a jeweler. Most days this church is closed, but we were out walking
on December 12, Guadalupe Day, and were in luck. Not only were
the exterior wall doors open, the church doors themselves were
open and this is what we saw.

|
As
you can see below on the left in the photograph taken of
El Patrocinio from a neighboring street, the
structure dominates the neighborhood skyline.

|
All
of El Patrocinio's iron work that we could see is in great need
of care. We could
not see the bell in
the tower
seen in the photo below on the extreme left, but if the bell pull
pictured in the middle below is any indication, it probably needs
attention
too. When I saw the beautiful wooden doors pictured below on the
right , I wanted to run and get my mix of turpentine and boiled
linseed oil and a lot of soft cotton cloths. But in truth, we're
sure El Patricinio is scheduled for the same extremely careful
restoration
as have
been so
many of Oaxaca's historic buildings.
