Should
you run into trouble yourself or if you appreciate things a little
strange, do visit one or more of the state or privately owned pawn
shops in Oaxaca. They are a way of life for many people here. In
the state run shops the business works pretty much on the consignment
concept. Folks bring in what they can part with and come to a price
with the pawn shop staff. At the drop off they receive a relatively
small percentage of the value of their merchandise until it is sold
at which time they receive a much larger percentage, the pawn shop
taking a relatively small percentage of the sale price.

PHARMACIES
Pharmaceutical
drugs are available over the counter in pharmacies in Mexico
except for most habit forming pain killers and sleeping pills.
If you are self diagnosing and medicating, you need to do your
homework on the internet before buying and using what are normally
restricted medications. You will need to know the dosage, times/day,
side effects and contraindications and you will need to have
the name and contact information of a physician if you run into
trouble. For those purchasing prescribed medications in Mexico
because they are less expensive than in the States perhaps, be
aware that the quality or strength of pharmaceuticals may differ
country to country.
