BANKING AND CURRENCY EXCHANGE

Banking is not an easy proposition in Mexico, though it has gotten better over the years. Compared to the States, the system often requires patience. If you are visiting Oaxaca as a tourist or traveler, it is not much of an issue. 

If you are in Oaxaca as a buyer, banking can sometimes be more difficult. When you get to know your suppliers, they will usually accept your personal checks. Before that happens, be sure to have plenty of cash, traveler's checks, your check book, your cash advance card and your credit cards. One of them is sure to work.

When you run into someone who is unwilling to accept your personal check, don't take it personally. When a check bounces, even innocently, people here have lost their businesses and even their homes. They are giving you a great vote of confidence when they accept a check. Cash is always easiest!

BANKS
There are several banks in town; most of them are within spitting distance of the zócalo or town square. In the morning, most will exchange US cash or traveler's checks for pesos. You can also request a credit card advance.

Opening a bank account is not always easy; oftentimes you must have a local person willing to give you a reference. This is serious business for them because if the bank has a problem with you, the bank has a legal right to settle the problem with the person who recommended you. That means the local person who trusted you will be charged the amount the bank feels you owe. If it is a large amount, you could literally put someone out of their own home. Mexico has no bankruptcy protection laws. The banks take everything. So, that said, it can all be worked out. There are people in Oaxaca who regularly cash checks. Ask around and get to know them. Be sure that your checks are good before you write them or cash them. Plan ahead. You have an idea what money you will need; don't wait to get it until the last moment.
